Installation guide

Install the eSIM before you travel, on your home wi-fi, while you've time to spare. It takes about a minute and you only do it once.

Before you start

  • Be on wi-fi or a working data connection
  • Have the QR code from your order email to hand, on paper, or on a second screen
  • Make sure your phone supports eSIM (it almost certainly does)

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
  2. Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code
  3. Point the camera at the QR code from your email
  4. Follow the prompts, and label the line something like “Travel”
  5. Leave your usual line as the default for calls and texts

On Android

Steps vary a little by make, but the path is the same:

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs
  2. Tap Add SIM, then Download a SIM instead?
  3. Scan the QR code when prompted
  4. Give the line a name and finish setup

When you arrive

  1. Open your SIM or cellular settings
  2. Turn data roaming on for the travel line, this is what lets it connect abroad, and it won’t affect your home line
  3. Set the travel line as your data line
  4. You’re online, the plan activates on that first connection

A couple of good habits

  • Install at home, not at the airport, do it once, calmly, in advance
  • Don’t delete the eSIM after one trip if you’ll top it up later
  • Keep your home line on for calls and texts; only data moves across
